Smart Dimension in Solidworks Sketch

“Smart Dimension” is the dimensioning command that uses artificial intelligence to create dimensions according to selected objects in Solidworks sketch.

To activate command:

  1.  Click on the “Smart Dimension” command on the sketch tab as shown in the figure
  2. Select the command on the path of Tools => Dimensions => Smart

To create dimension:

  1. Start the “Smart Dimension” command
  2. Select dimensioning entity/entities.
    1. To create a dimension on a single object as Length, radius, diameter, etc… :
      Click on the single entity
    2. To create a dimension between two entities as distance, angle, etc…:
      Select the first entity then select the second entity
  3. The dimension will appear on the cursor and moves together with the mouse cursor in the graphics window 
  4. Place the dimension in the graphics window. 
  5. Modify box will open in the graphics window.
  6. Type the new dimension value in the “Modify” dialog box.
  7. To create dimension
    1. Press “Enter”
    2. Click on the “Ok” icon on the “Modify” box.
  8. The dimension command is still active.
  9. If you want to create new dimensions repeat step 2,3,4,5,6,7
  10. To finish the command press “Esc”

If you want to edit the dimension after it created, double-click on the dimension. The “Modify” box will open. Type a new dimension on the distance box value in the “Modify” dialog box. 

Activity: Create a circle positioned on x: 40mm y: 15mm by dimensions and diameter: 20mm

  1. Create a circle.
  2. Start the “Smart Dimension” command
  3. Select circle center then select the sketch origin.
  4. The dimension appeared on the graphics window automatically. Move the cursor up or down to change the dimension type to a horizontal dimension.
  5. Click on the graphics window to create a dimension.
  6. Modify dialog box will open. Type 40 on the distance box and press “Enter”.
    The horizontal dimension is created and the circle x-position changed to 40mm.
  7. The dimension command is still active.
  8. Select circle center then select the sketch origin.
  9. The dimension appeared on the graphics window automatically. Move the cursor to left or right to change the dimension type to a vertical dimension.
  10. Modify dialog box will open. Type 15 on the distance box. and press “Enter”.
    The vertical dimension is created and the circle y-position changed to 15mm.
  11. Select the circle circumference.
  12. The diameter dimension will appear on the mouse cursor. Place dimension on the graphics window.
  13. Modify box will appear. Type 20 in the distance box and press “Enter”
    The diameter of the circle changed to 20mm.
  14. Press “Esc” to exit the “Dimension” command
